Creating Awareness About Food Waste and Food Security

World Food Day is observed every year on 16 October to raise awareness about hunger, nutrition, food security and sustainable agricultural practices. It is a reminder that access to safe and nutritious food is essential for human well-being and sustainable development. Food wastage is a major concern because food production requires valuable natural resources. When food is wasted, these resources are wasted too:
🌾
LandGrowing food needs valuable farmland.
💧
WaterWater is used at every stage of food production.
⚡
EnergyEnergy goes into growing, storing and transporting food.
🧑‍🌾
Human LabourEvery meal carries the effort of the people behind it.
Reducing food waste improves resource efficiency, protects the environment and supports efforts to address food insecurity. Keeping this in focus, the School of Agricultural Sciences organized the programme to encourage students to minimize wastage and adopt responsible food consumption habits in their everyday lives.

Welcome Address and Introduction to World Food Day

The programme commenced with a warm welcome to all students by Dr. Mahaveer Suman. Dr. Gunjeet Kaur, Dean, School of Agricultural Sciences, then introduced the event and explained the significance of celebrating World Food Day. Active Student Participation and Learning

Approximately 50-55 students from the university took part in the programme, reflecting the importance of engaging young people in discussions on food security, sustainable agriculture and environmental responsibility. Students were reminded that a hunger-free future needs efforts from individuals, educational institutions, agricultural communities and society as a whole - and that small changes in everyday food habits can reduce wastage and improve the efficient use of resources. Such initiatives also connect agricultural knowledge with real-world challenges and help students become more responsible consumers and environmentally conscious citizens.
